A little outside the normal for our trail collection; however, this unique place could not be left out. Orr Park is located within walking distance of downtown Montevallo and the University of Montevallo czmpus. The park, bordered on one side by Shoal creek, is a family friendly area with a playgtound, picnic tables, and large open grass field. Enumerous cedar trees adorn the property along with other species of trees. Children (and adults alike) enjoy wading in the creek. The waking path itself is paved and wraps around the perimeter of the park. The distance varies as there are different branches that can taken, but overall it is 3/4 of a mile and level for most of the walk.
What makes Orr Park unique though is not the parks traditional ammenities, but the many tree carvings that can be seen throughout. Most of these carvings can be viewed in the wooded area along Shoal Creek. Many of the trees had died due to a storm and if not for the vision of Tim Tingle would have been removed. In 1993 he began his work which now includes over 30 sculptures of faces, figures, and storybook characters. Only dead trees are used for the carvings, leaving the lives one to flurish and provide shade for visitors as they stroll through the park.
