Dismals Canyon is a privately owned 85-acre park located in Phil Campbell, Alabama. Declared a National Natural Landmark in 1974, the sandstone gorge is one of the few places dismalites (orfelia fultoni) live. The larval forms of the flies emit a bright blue-green light which can be seen during night tours. Two waterfalls and six natural bridges can be viewed when hiking the 1.5 mile long trail which circles the canyon floor. Visitors to the conservatory can also enjoy lunch at the Soda Fountain & Grill or spend the night in a cabin or at one of the secluded campsites. Be sure to check their website for complete details and operating hours.
